Zamanga Village Chicken Farm and Market Stall
A small-scale broiler chicken operation with an attached market stall, managed by the Ngoma Family. Before the completion of this project, members of this community had to walk 10 kilometers to buy goods and produce. This project has indirectly alleviated local hunting pressure on wild game animals.

Having saved enough money to purchase a car, Daliso Ngoma is able to source hybrid chicks from the provincial capital. With a mix of commercial feed additives and local grain byproducts, the family is providing affordable, sustainable, meat to a community that struggles with food insecurity.
The farm has a 600 bird capacity, and is sectioned into three different areas. By subdividing the farm, they are able to stagger production, yielding 200 chickens bi-weekly.

Using funds generated from the chicken operation, we purchased a solar-powered freezer. As the only source of refrigeration in the village, the Ngoma family is busy selling drinks and frozen chicken portions.

In the first stage of the farm, the chicks are kept warm at night using biochar briquettes. Steel roof sheeting is used to retain the heat.

Both buildings are constructed using locally-produced materials, but we added security measures to prevent theft from impacting the business.
